Applying for Green Card Renewal After a Name Change

One of the most important pieces of immigration documentation you have is your green card. This card, also known as the Permanent Resident Card or Form I-551, is a permanent visa that gives you the ability to work and live in the US. You will need to always carry this card with you so that you can always prove your status as a permanent resident.

There will be times when you will need to renew your card. You will, for example, need to renew your card if it is lost or stolen. If your green card is older than ten years, you will need to apply to US Immigration (USCIS) for green card renewal. As well, your card has an expiry date on it. When this card expiry date is approaching, you will want to apply for green card renewal so that your card does not expire before you receive your new card.

To apply for green card renewal, you will usually need to complete USCIS form I-90. One of the most common reasons why people apply for green card renewal is because they have changed their name. If you have gotten married, changed your name legally, or have gotten divorced and have changed your name, for example, you will need to update your green card to ensure that your card has your accurate name.

If you have changed your name, you can apply for a new green card by completing form I-90. You will need to pay the filing fee and send copies of the back and front of your expired green card as well. To be complete, your application will require two photographs. Form I-90 provides very detailed instructions for these photos and it is important to follow all these instructions carefully. You will also need to submit official copies of documentation to prove that your name has changed. If you have been married or divorced, for example, you will need to provide a copy of your marriage certificate or divorce decree. If you have legally changed your name, you will need to show a copy of the court decree. You will also need to show personal identification to prove your identity.

If you are filing by mail, you can send your form I-90 by courier deliveries (such as UPS or Federal Express) or by regular post. Note the addresses on the form I-90 instructions. There are different addresses depending on how you send your application. Make sure that you send your application to the correct address or USCIS will reject the application. Make sure that you include a complete and correctly filled out application and the correct filing fee. You can also file online using the Internet. If you are not filing in the US, you will need to contact a Port of Entry, US Consulate or USCIS office for assistance with your I-90.

Once you have applied, the USCIS will notify you of their decision regarding your request. If your application is correctly filled out and your name change is approved, the USCIS will send you a new green card via the mail. This new card will be valid for ten years.
